Die heute im Bamberger Naturkunde-Museum vorhandenen naturwissenschaftlichen Sammlungen gehen auf das Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts zurück. Seit dem Jahr 2004 konzentrieren sich die Sammlungsaktivitäten auf die Sicherung des Naturerbes Fossilien der Wattendorfer Plattenkalke.
